Since we released the best beers for weight loss we had a number of people wanting to know about spirits, so here it is.
We honestly believe that you can lose the beer gut without losing all the beers and you can do the same if you don't drink beer and prefer the harder stuff.
The truth is that it will probably be easier for you to lose weight and still enjoy a night cap based on calories alone. Traditional beer typically has more calories in it then a standard shot or nip of spirits (44ml) so that's a plus right there.
The thing that normally puts people over the edge is the mixers that come along with it and the sugar that's in them.
Ask anyone in the general public or health and fitness space and you will hear "Weight loss and getting fit requires you to eat better, train harder and most importantly, drop the booze."
Annnnnnnhhhhhhh wrong!
Despite what you may have heard or read, spirits are the healthiest alcohols on the market. So you can still sip while the scale goes down.
Now this doesn't give you permission to go neck a whole bottle on a Friday night because we said so because excess alcohol intake can affect not only your physical health but your mental too.
It's all about finding that sweet spot between enjoying yourself and staying on track. That is the key to long term weight loss.
Alright enough talk it's time to dig in.
#1 Vodka - Calories 97 - Sugar 0g - Carbs 0g
Hard liquor offers far fewer calories than brewed products like beer and cider, with some professionals suggesting heavier drinks will help you consume less alcohol overall. Vodka offers one of the lowest calorie drinks as long as you stick to mixers like fresh lime and soda or anything sugar free.
#2 Tequila - Calories 69 - Sugar 0g - Carbs 0g
I know what you're thinking "I haven't had a Tequila shot or margarita since i was in my 20's! I'm not talking about trying to get to the bottom of the bottle but more about sipping Tequila or simple mixers to freshen things up.
Not only is Tequila one of the lowest-calorie alcohols out there, it actually has some hidden health benefits as well.
According to multiple sources the agavins, the natural sugar found in the spirit are non-digestible, which means they act like fibre and won’t raise your blood sugar levels. Plus the low calories in tequila will help you to lower cholesterol and may lead to weight loss.
#3 Whiskey - Calories 105 - Sugar 0g - Carbs 0g
We’ve known for a long time that red wine is loaded with antioxidants, but whisky shares a similar trait. There are a number studies in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Harvard University and the European Heart Journal found that whisky lowers the risk of heart disease.
The best part about whisky is that it contains absolutely no fat, a few carbohydrates or sugar, barely changing the levels of blood glucose. Harvard University even found that the alcohol, in moderate quantities, might even protect against type-2 diabetes.
It's best to have it on the rocks as it will only come to 105 calories per serve this is one of the lowest-calorie alcohols, and tastiest.
#4 Rum - Calories 97 - Sugar 0g - Carbs 0g
One of Australia's proudest products is good old Bundaberg Rum. Made from molasses and other sugarcane byproducts, rum isn’t the lowest calorie alcohol, but it does have some other health benefits.
Some have claimed that a single serving is enough to reduce anxiety, calm you down and give you a good night’s sleep, however, there is little evidence to support this. Just make sure to have the right mixer to keep the calories and sugar levels down.
#5 Gin - Calories 110 - Sugar 0g - Carbs 0g
Now i'm sure most of you blokes are not walking around home with a cocktail on a Friday night. Now with most cocktails, it isn’t the liquor that makes your favourite gin and tonic bad for you. Much like the Vodka, lime and soda the Gin in tonic is its fancy little brother.
It's a simple and clean little sipper if vodka isn't your thing. Give it a go and your tastebuds and waistline will thank you.
