Healthy Hot Drinks For Winter

During the colder months, there’s nothing quite as relaxing as having a nice hot drink in front of a roaring fire. Unfortunately, many of the most popular heated beverages (we’re looking at you, hot chocolate) can be quite calorific. To ensure that you can continue to sip on something hearty during winter while also keeping the weight off, we’ve put together a list of healthy hot drinks.
Coffee
Surprised to see this on the list? Don’t be. When drunk in moderation, coffee is a perfectly healthy drink and is great for a quick jump-start on a cold winter morning. Ideally, you should opt for a black coffee, which has between two to five calories per cup. However, if you need a little bit of milk to get the good stuff down, opt for a small or medium-sized beverage with low-fat or skimmed milk.
Ginger Tea
Traditionally the drink of choice for people with upset stomachs, like coffee, this spicy drink can give you a much-needed kick in the pants on cold days. You can make it fresh by grating or slicing a piece of ginger root, which you then leave to brew in boiling water for 10 minutes, or you can take the easy route and buy a teabag.
Green Tea
Not only is green tea a delicious and refreshing drink, but it can also help you lose weight. It contains a high amount of catechin, an antioxidant that has been linked to increased weight loss. Be careful not to indulge in matcha lattes though, which often contain hidden sugar.
Peppermint Tea
This refreshing brew is naturally calorie and caffeine-free and comes with a stack of health benefits. Some research has indicated that peppermint tea can facilitate better digestion and fresher breath. Likewise, it has been shown to help soothe people in times of great stress.
Chai Tea
It’s very important that we differentiate here between pure chai tea and chai lattes. Chai tea is made by brewing black tea with a range of spices and can be found in loose-leaf and tea bag form. Pure chai tea is low in calories. Chai lattes are made when the tea is mixed with steamed milk and can have up to 30g of sugar per cup, so best avoid it.
Man Shake
Did you really think we were going to leave this off the list? To make a hot Man Shake, all you need to do is mix your powder with hot water rather than cold water. When warmed up, a Man Shake can prove to be a very hardy and nourishing breakfast. However, that’s only the beginning, as you can also use the Man Shake to make a variety of different hot and healthy drinks including the Man Shake Hot Chocolate and the Vanilla Man Shake Chai Latte.
